If your a fan of anime and manga you've heard the name Crunchyroll before. Crunchyroll is an anime and manga streaming site that's main appeal comes from simulcast, meaning the episodes air in America an hour after they air in japan. As much as I would love to endorse Crunchyroll, I'm here to talk about there anime awards, and why I'm not a fan.
The Crunchyroll anime awards features 13 categories, and 2 sponsored categories. The 13 categories are: best protagonist, best antagonist, best boy, best girl, best opening sequence, best ending sequence, best VA performance (JP), best VA performance (EN), best director, best animation, best film, best character design, anime of the year. The sponsored categories are: best fight scene (presented by CAPCOM), best continuing series (presented by VRV).
My problem with the Crunchyroll anime awards is not the categories, but the nominees.
For a lot of these categories Crunchyroll, puts animes that haven't been critically reviewed, repeats animes for multiple categories (I mean LOTS of categories), doesn't put popular animes, and overall looks like some Crunchyroll employee looked in their recommended and said, "Hey this looks good- lets nominate it for best director!"
For example, Jojo was nominated for best opening sequence and best character design. I feel like it should have also been nominated for best ongoing anime, and originally Guido Mista had been planned to be nominated for best boy, only to not be.
While some animes get no nominations, animes like AGGRETSUKO get 6. 6 nominations for an anime that is, in my opinion, mundane at best.
Another anime I think deserved more nominations for is Hunter X Hunter.
I think Hunter X Hunter should have been nominated for best ongoing anime, best opening sequence, best fight scene, and Chrollo Lucilfur, Hisoka Morrow, or Meruem should have been nominated for best antagonist.
All in all what I'm trying to say is that I don't think the Crunchyroll anime awards matter. Year after year we've seen them make the same mistakes: not critically reviewing animes, repeating animes way to much, not putting in popular animes.
Last year My Hero Academia won 5 categories, this year I assume AGGRETSUKO will have the same kind of outcome.
Crunchyroll continues to claim that its all for the community, but with their lack of touch with fans its becoming more and more hard to believe.
